Fighters will be rehabilitated in a hospital, not in separate centers

Changes have already begun in the field of military rehabilitation. In particular, the rehabilitation of soldiers after injuries does not take place in separate centers, but directly in large hospitals.

Tetyana Lomakina, authorized advisor to the President of Ukraine on barrier-free issues, said this in an interview with “Interfax-Ukraine”.

Already in the first 24-72 hours, specialists come to the person in the ward and start working. Then, when she is transferred to the department for rehabilitation, she begins to visit the physical and medical rehabilitation hall, the occupational therapy hall, where she learns to manage her body in a new way, to perform ordinary household tasks.

If necessary, during rehabilitation, the patient receives the help of other specialists, for example, a psychotherapist, a speech and language therapist, narrow specialists”she explained.

The adviser added that 244 hospitals have already concluded contracts for rehabilitation assistance. For this, they had to have a sufficient number of highly qualified specialists and proven equipment for work.

“For example, electrophoresis or magnetic therapy, known to everyone since childhood, are still widely used in Ukraine. But in countries that worry about the effectiveness of all procedures, you will not see it. After all, studies have shown that electrophoresis is ineffective during rehabilitation, because it does not improve strength muscles or joint mobility. Therefore, in developed countries, electrophoresis has been abandoned, and other methods are used – active rehabilitation“, – explains Tetyana Lomakina.

Some hospitals began the transition to evidence-based rehabilitation as early as 2015-2016. Examples are “Okhmatdyt” and medical institutions of the Rivne region.

Tetyana Lomakina adds that the government recently adopted a resolution that simplifies the possibilities of obtaining rehabilitation aids – prostheses, wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, etc.

Prosthetists will also be involved in the work of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, which includes a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a psychologist.

The adviser notes that thanks to these changes, the military will be able to receive prostheses faster.
