Too expensive: people criticize the 2024 Olympics in Paris due to inflated ticket prices

Athletes have joined the vociferous criticism of the high cost of tickets for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which they condemned as undermining the organizers’ promise to make the Games accessible to all, AFP reports.

The second phase of ticket sales began on May 11, with around 1.5 million individual tickets available, after more than three million were sold in multi-event packages in the first phase.

According to the organizers, the sale was fast: two thirds of the last lot were sold out on the first day.

Tickets for the men’s heavyweight judo final, which is expected to feature France’s three-time Olympic champion Teddy Riner, sold out in two hours.

“Honestly speaking, everything started very, even too much. This is proof of great enthusiasm,” the organizing committee said.

But, as in the first stage, there were loud protests, especially in social networks, about the fact that the exorbitant prices contradict the “Games for all”, promised by the organizers.

Of the promised one million seats at 24 euros ($26), the lowest price for next year’s Olympics, almost 150,000 were put up for sale in the second round. But since these tickets were sold first, potential buyers quickly faced significantly higher prices.

Three days after the start of the second stage, sports fans were offered tickets for 690 and even 980 euros for the track and field semifinals and up to 2,700 euros for the opening ceremony.

According to sports policy expert David Roizen, in the lucrative world of modern sports, the Games for All “does not exist.”

“The Champions League final, the Olympic Games are events reserved for the financial elite,” Roisen told AFP.

“It would be a mistake to raise the issue of holding the Games for everyone.”
