The Ukrainian passport took 30th place in the world ranking of passports for 2023. The Ukrainian document gives the opportunity to visit 93 countries without visas. This time, the Henley Passport Index, which measures global freedom of travel, has 103 positions. Singapore is the first, and Afghanistan is the last. However, in the summer of 2023, Japan dropped to third place. “Gold” was awarded to Singapore, whose citizens can visit 193 of the 227 countries of the world without visas. For a long time, the ranking was dominated by Asian countries, but now the first steps of the ranking are occupied by European countries. Germany, Italy and Spain rose to second place with visa-free access to 190 destinations, while Japan and South Korea took third place. Citizens of Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg and Sweden have access to 189 destinations without a prior visa. Great Britain is in the fourth position, its citizens can travel without visas to 188 countries. The USA is in eighth position, having visa-free access to 183 destinations. The Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and evaluates 199 passports worldwide. The rating is updated in real time throughout the year as changes in visa policy take effect. In its latest issue, Henley & Partners notes that over the 18-year history of the ranking, the average number of destinations where travelers can enter without a visa has almost doubled, from 58 in 2006 to 109 in 2023. However, the gap in travel freedom between those at the top and bottom of the rankings is wider than ever. Citizens of Afghanistan can visit only 27 destinations without a prior visa, residents of Iraq – 29 destinations, and Syria – 30.
