Churches, mosques, the Krishna temple: Ukrainians collect data on shrines destroyed by the Russians

Churches, mosques, the Krishna temple: Ukrainians collect data on shrines destroyed by the Russians

[ad_1]

Ukraine has created a digital platform that will publish data on religious buildings destroyed by the Russians during the war.

Activists collected materials on 16 religious objects in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. Information about 8 of them is already available on the “Temples under fire” platform, the authors of the “UP. Life” initiative reported.

The site publishes photos and videos of the destruction and damage to shrines of various denominations, which were managed to be done during the expeditions.

With this, the authors of the project want to document Russia’s destruction of Ukrainian shrines, draw attention to the damage caused to the spiritual and cultural-historical heritage of Ukraine, and also promote the restoration of churches in the future.

“We tried to choose religious buildings of various denominations: OCU, Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Baptists, Protestants, Muslims, etc. We focused on settlements where the fiercest battles took place.” – say the initiators of the project.

Church of St. John the Theologian, Kurylivka, Kharkiv region

“All religions and denominations represented in Ukraine suffer losses without exception. For example, in Bakhmut a mosque was completely destroyed, in Kramatorsk – a temple of Krishnaites, in Druzhkivka – a house of prayer of Evangelical Christian-Baptists, in Rusky Tyshki – a wooden church of the OCU, etc.

But the largest number of destroyed and damaged churches belong to the religious communities of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate – more than 80 and more than 200, respectively.” – say the authors of the project.

Temple of Krishna, Kramatorsk

As of the beginning of 2023, at least 494 religious buildings, spiritual educational institutions and shrines were destroyed, damaged or looted by the Russian occupiers in Ukraine, the Institute of Religious Freedom reported.

The largest number of facilities were destroyed in Donetsk region (over 120) and Luhansk region (over 70). Large-scale destruction was recorded in the Kharkiv, Kherson and Kyiv regions.

Currently, on the website you can view detailed information about 8 destroyed religious buildings.

The project will be expanded and replenished with processed materials from religious buildings and from other regions of Ukraine that are suffering from the war.

We will remind you that earlier in Ukraine the digital platform “Map of Destruction” was launched, which captures the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
