“You are sick people, get out”: in Kyiv, a taxi driver refused to serve passengers in Ukrainian

In Kyiv, a taxi driver of the company Bolt refused to provide services in the state language, calling female passengers “sick”.

When the women asked the driver why he did not want to switch to Ukrainian, he asked them to get out of the car. Passengers recorded the conversation with the driver on a video that spread on the Internet.

The video shows how the driver of the car puts the belongings of the female passengers on the curb and demands that they get out of the taxi.

The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin reacted to the incident.

According to the ombudsman, the taxi driver violated Article 30 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”.

He added that the taxi driver “will not be able to avoid punishment.”

“Now we are preparing an appeal to the relevant authorities, in particular to the National Police of Ukraine and the Bolt transportation service company, to establish the identity of the violator and bring him to justice.”the Commissioner noted.

Violation of the law on language in the service sector is subject to an administrative penalty in the form of a fine in the amount of 200 to 300 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (3,400-5,100 UAH).

The Bolt company reported on the social network that the man was “permanently suspended from using the service.”

“We are also ready to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and provide all necessary information upon their official request”– the company noted in response to the request of public figure Andrii Smoliya.

We previously reported that 45% of Ukrainians believe that language is the most discriminated against in Ukraine.
