More than 20% of freshwater fish in the world are threatened with extinction – environmentalists

Approximately one-fifth of all freshwater fish in the world are threatened with extinction.
This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to study the red list of freshwater fish, Reuters and The Guardian reported.
Global warming, water pollution, overfishing and falling water levels are the main factors affecting the population decline.
Of the 14,898 assessed species, 3,086 (20.7%) are threatened with extinction.

Atlantic salmon, which live in both fresh and salt water, are also at risk. It is listed as “near threatened” as its global population declined by 23% between 2006 and 2020.
Among the factors that have influenced this are mortality due to parasites, as well as an increase in the number of invasive species.
Another fish that is currently in danger is the “big-toothed robber”, which lives in Kenya’s largest desert lake called Turkana.
According to the IUCN, this species has been classified as “vulnerable” due to the dehydration of the environment due to climate change, as well as the depletion of water flows caused by the construction of dams.
The latest analysis also found that green turtles are endangered.
At the same time, scientists announced positive news, in particular, about saigas, which have moved from the “critically endangered” category to the category close to extinction.
Their population has increased by 1,100% in just 7 years, the most in Kazakhstan.
It will be recalled that earlier in the USA the wolverine was included in the list of endangered species.
Scientists also said that 2,000 species of amphibians are at risk of extinction due to climate change.
