A completely preserved medieval glove dating back to the 14th century was found during excavations near Kyburg Castle, located south of the city of Winterthur (Switzerland).

According to the infrastructure department of the canton of Zurich, only five mittens of the 14th century were discovered in Switzerland. However, their condition is not as satisfactory as the glove found near the castle. It was possible to find all the iron parts, and some of her fingers were not corroded and look like new, writes Arkeonews.

The gauntlet consists of 25 separate iron plates, folded in the form of scales and firmly connected to each other with the help of side rivets. Its individual parts were attached to the inner side from a leather base. Small plates and flexible lower layers allowed the owner to comfortably hold the sword and clench the hand into a fist. The length of the entire mitten is more than 35 centimeters.

Archaeologists found the mitten and fragments of a pair of it while exploring a medieval weaving cellar destroyed by fire in the 14th century. Blacksmithing products were also found there. A total of 50 metal objects, including hammers, keys and bits.

It is not yet known who the find belonged to. Scientists are trying to establish how rare armored gauntlets were at that time, or whether they were remelted.

A replica of the armored gauntlet will be on display at Cybourg Castle, which is now a museum reserve, from the end of March as part of a permanent display, complemented by a reconstruction of the rest of the armour.

Kyburg Castle was first mentioned in 1027 as a “cow fortress”. The name indicates that it was originally used as a castle shelter for livestock.

The first fortification on this site was probably built in the second half of the 10th century. The first castle was destroyed in 1028 or 1030 by Emperor Konrad II. The fortress was rebuilt and soon it became the center of Kyburg County.
