The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine removed from the church calendar the day of memory of Prince Alexander of Novgorod (Nevsky), which was celebrated on November 23.

According to the submission of the Synodal Calendar Commission, it was decided to remove from the church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine the day of memory of the venerable Prince Alexander of Novgorod (Nevsky), in the scheme of Oleksii, November 23. – reported on the OCU website.

Instead, at the request of the Synodal Calendar Commission, it was decided to establish an additional day of commemoration of Reverend Oleksandr, the first abbot of the “Nevsypushchi” monastery, on November 23 and to include it in the church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

It was also decided to add the following memorable dates to the calendar:

  • on the fourth Saturday of November – a memorial day in memory of all those killed by hunger in Ukraine;
  • November 26 – the day of memory of Saint Stylian of Paflagonsky;
  • postpone from June 1 to April 7 the day of memory of St. Justyn Cheliyskyi;
  • February 3 – the holiday of the discovery of the relics of Saint Raphael (Zaborovsky), Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Russia.

It should be noted that Oleksandr Yaroslavovich Nevsky (1221-1263) was a prince of Novgorod, Pskov, and Vladimir, father of the first prince of Moscow.

The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Alexander Nevsky as a saint in 1547.

We will remind you that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine approved the transition to the New Julian calendar from September 1, 2023 during the Local Council on July 27.

Earlier, the UGCC decided to switch to the Gregorian calendar.
