In Japan, the world’s first simultaneous transplantation of lungs and liver from living donors was performed.

The patient was a boy under 10 years old, informs edition of The Japan Times.

The child had congenital dyskeratosis, which is a genetic disease that is accompanied by abnormalities of skin development, damage to mucous membranes, bone marrow failure, and a tendency to malignant tumors.

At the age of 2, the boy developed aplastic anemia – the bone marrow stopped producing a sufficient number of blood cells. At the age of 4, he received a bone marrow transplant from his sister.

Later, the child developed cirrhosis of the liver. In addition, his pulmonary arteries and veins were connected, so he could not absorb oxygen on his own.

Kyoto University Hospital performed the world’s first simultaneous lung and liver transplant from living donors. The boy received parts of his lungs from his parents, and part of his liver from his grandfather.

Earlier in the world, similar interventions were made only from dead donors.

Two and a half months after the transplant, the boy was able to walk without an oxygen tank. Another month later, he was discharged from the hospital for further recovery.
