On Thursday, March 14, a short list of nominees for the award was announced Drahomán Prize 2023. It is awarded to translators from the Ukrainian language into world languages.

The Drahomán Prize 2023 finalists were:

  • Eero Bulk (Finland) – translator from Ukrainian to Finnish. Nominated with book translation Serhii Rudenko “Battle for Kyiv” (Fabula, 2023).
  • Katarzyna Kotynska (Poland) – a translator from Ukrainian into Polish. Nominated with book translation Oksana Zabuzhko “The Longest Journey” (Komor, 2023).
  • Mikael Nydal (Sweden) – translator from Ukrainian to Swedish. Nominated with a translation of a poetry collection Arthur Drone “Here we were” (Stary Lev Publishing House, 2023).

Along with the list of finalists, the Prize Chapter also announced the name of the winner Special award. This year, it will be awarded to a translator from Ukrainian to Georgian Raul Chilacava “for building Ukrainian-Georgian cultural bridges”. In 2023, three Ukrainian books translated by him were published in Georgia: Markiyan Kamysh “Oformlandia, or a Walk in the Zone”, Anthology “Dictionary of War”: Ukrainian authors about the war and Taras Shevchenko “My thoughts…”

Drahomán Prizewhich is awarded for high translation skills and contribution to the promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad, was established in 2020 by the Ukrainian Institute, the Ukrainian PEN and the Ukrainian Book Institute.

The first laureate of the award was the German translator Claudia Date. In 2021, it was received by the Polish translator Bohdan Zadura. In 2022, Iryna Dmytryshyn became the laureate of the award.

The name of the laureate of the Drahomán Prize 2023 will be announced during the award ceremony at the end of April in Kyiv. The laureate receives a statuette made by Ukrainian artist Anna Zvyagintseva, a monetary award of 3,000 euros, as well as additional opportunities for work and promotion of his work.
