In Lviv, doctors saved the newborn Solomiyka. The child could die at any moment due to a congenital defect – her lungs were covered with cysts that prevented breathing.

The operation was performed on the eighth day of the baby’s life, reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv.

Solomiyka is the fourth child in the family. Her parents found out about her health problems during a routine ultrasound at the 20th week of pregnancy.

Doctors made a diagnosis – cystic adenomatous lung malformation. Instead of healthy tissues, the left lung of the unborn child was covered with cysts – pathological cavities filled with liquid.

“While the child was in the mother’s womb, these formations – cysts – were “calm”, because at that time the lungs did not breathe. But as soon as the baby is born, the organ begins to work and the cysts also become active. This is the main problem “, – explained Andriy Dvorakevich, head of the Surgery Center of St. Nicholas Hospital.

Doctors made a “map of salvation” for the child while it was still in the mother’s womb. When Solomiyka was born, she was examined and the diagnosis was confirmed.

Due to numerous cysts, the left lung did not function at all – it did not perform the function of gas exchange.

“Usually, babies with cystic-adenomatous malformation of the lungs are operated on at least at the eighth month of life. However, Solomia did not have time to grow up and gain strength before the operation. With the first breath of the child, the neoplasms in the lungs increased with lightning speed.” – the hospital said.

The cysts began to press on the baby’s heart, trachea, nerves and bronchi. Without the operation, Solomiyka could die at any moment.

The girl was operated on on the eighth day of life. Interventions were performed through three small punctures – 3 and 5 millimeters each. This method is less traumatic and safer for the child. Previously, this operation was performed through a large incision, but this could lead to deformation of the chest and spine.

Doctors removed the lower diseased half of Solomiyka’s lung. The operation was successful – now the child is completely healthy and has already gone home.
