In the Tver region, busts of Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Mikhail Kalinin and Felix Dzerzhinsky were installed on the territory of the “Mednoye” memorial complex, which is dedicated to the victims of political repressions, 7×7 reports.
It is noted that Polish prisoners of war shot in 1940 by the NKVD regional office, as well as Soviet citizens – victims of Stalin’s terror, are buried in “Medny”. Earlier, a commemorative sign “to compatriots, victims of wars and repressions” was installed there.
According to the media, in the coming days, they plan to open an exhibition on the territory of the memorial, in connection with which sculptures of Soviet leaders were installed. The director of “Medny” Alexander Chunosov called it “logical and understandable”.
“This is the era. They didn’t have anything to do with the repressions? What do you see as a mismatch here?” Chunosov is quoted as saying by the “Podyom” publication.
According to the human rights society “Memorial”, the installation of the sculptures is a direct indication of the State Central Museum of Modern History and the director of the “Mednoe” complex.
- During the years of Joseph Stalin’s rule, millions of people became victims of mass repressions in the USSR. After his death, many repressed people were rehabilitated, and objects associated with Stalin, including cities, were renamed. Monuments to the Soviet leader were also demolished. However, in recent years, monuments to Stalin have been erected again in a number of Russian cities. As a rule, they are installed on private territory, for example, in the courtyards of regional committees of the CPRF. There are, however, sculptures in public places, as in Volgograd. In August, an eight-meter monument to Stalin was opened in the city of Velikie Luky.
