A monument to the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was erected in the children’s park of the city of Orlov, Kirov region, reports “Podyom”.
According to mass media, the grand opening ceremony should take place on Tuesday, October 24, and the participation of Stalin’s great-grandson Selim Bensaad and great-nephew Felix Dzerzhinsky is planned.
It is noted that funds for the monument were collected by local residents on the initiative of the regional branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and the permission to install it in the children’s park was given by the head of Orlov, Sergey Populkin, since it was in this place that the monument was located during the USSR.
At the same time, the government of the Kirov region told the publication “Podyom” that they pointed out to the head of Orlov “the inadmissibility of authoritarian decisions” and recommended holding “an open vote, since not all citizens support this initiative.” However, the vote was not held, because – as stated in the official commentary of the regional government – “active citizens of the city sent a statement to the prosecutor’s office regarding the fact of the installation of the monument.”
- During the years of Joseph Stalin’s rule, millions of people became victims of mass repressions in the USSR. After the dictator’s death, many repressed people were rehabilitated, and objects associated with Stalin, including cities, were renamed. Monuments to the Soviet leader were also demolished. However, in recent years, monuments to Stalin have been erected again in a number of Russian cities. The publication “Mozhem obschitsya” calculated that there are already 110 of them, and 95 of them were installed under the rule of Vladimir Putin, and the pace of construction of monuments doubled after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
- In October, a bust of Stalin was installed at the burial place of the victims of mass repressions in the Tver region.
