Dmitriy Sokov, a scientist and inspector of the Kuril Reserve, has acquired the island of Rogacheva and plans to turn it into a private reserve. Tens of thousands of birds nest on the island. The edition “Kedr” drew attention to the story.
Sokov leased the island under the “Far Eastern Hectare” program in 2017. According to the program, after five years it is possible to get ownership of the land if it is proved that it is being developed. When drawing up the documents, Sokov wrote that the plot is used “for the protection of natural territories.”
“For five years, I organized and financed scientific work on the island with the involvement of ornithologists from the Kuril Reserve and the Russian Academy of Sciences. I bought a boat with a motor at my own expense to bring scientists there. At the same time, I organized excursions for tourists around the island,” says Sokov. Now the scientist is studying the procedure for opening a reserve on the island.
Rogacheva Island belongs to the group of southern Kuril Islands and is located not far from Kunashir Island. Between 17 and 30 thousand pairs of rhinoceros puffins nest on the rocky islet. There are also ptarmigans, woodpeckers and cormorants. The ownership of some Kuril Islands, including Kunashira, is contested by Japan.
