In Egypt, the results of the presidential elections held on December 10-12 have been summarized. The majority of votes – 89.6 percent – was won by the acting head of state, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Thus, he will stand for his third presidential term.
As reported by the National Electoral Office of Egypt, the turnout for the elections was almost 67 percent of the population, which is higher than in the previous elections in 2014 and 2018.
Al-Sisi’s competition consisted of three candidates: the leader of the Social Democratic Party Farid Zahran, the head of the liberal party “Wafd” Abdel Sanad Yamama and the leader of the Republican People’s Party Hazem Omar.
As noted by The Washington Post, al-Sisa’s election victory was predictable. However, in the next term of office, he will have to face aggravated problems in the country and the region. Egypt’s national debt has grown noticeably, the economy is unstable. According to estimates, almost every third citizen of the country with a population of 105 million lives in poverty.
In addition, Israel’s war against the ruling Hamas group in the Gaza Strip, recognized as terrorist in the USA, Europe and a number of other countries, is going on in the immediate vicinity. Hamas is also banned in Egypt. Egypt acts as one of the mediators in the resolution of the conflict, through its border with the Gaza Strip, the evacuation of foreign citizens and the seriously wounded from the Palestinian territory is organized, and humanitarian aid is delivered to Gaza. However, Egypt categorically refused to accept Palestinian refugees.
- A senior military officer, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, was elected president for the first time an hour after, as defense minister, he led the military toppling Islamist President Mohammed Morsa amid mass street protests. In 2018, al-Sisi was re-elected for a second four-year term. Amendments to the Constitution in 2019 added two more years to his current term and allowed him to run for a third, already six-year term as president.
