About a thousand Russian citizens and members of their families appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia with requests to help them evacuate from the Gaza Strip. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned this in a statement to the press on Wednesday. The agency calls them “de facto hostages” of the Gaza blockade.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not clarify whether it is making any efforts to evacuate Russians from the sector.

In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the decision of the UN Security Council not to accept the Russian draft resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and accused the USA, Great Britain, France and Japan of blocking it.

On October 18, the UN Security Council held an extraordinary meeting dedicated to the situation in the Middle East. In the draft resolution presented by Brazil, it was proposed to introduce “humanitarian pauses” – a temporary cessation of hostilities on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides in order to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The Russian side proposed amendments to the text, calling for an immediate and complete ceasefire. They were not accepted.

As a result, out of 15 members of the Security Council, 12 voted for the adoption of the resolution in its original form. Russia and Great Britain abstained. US representatives voted against. Since the United States is a permanent member of the Security Council, its vote against means a veto. The resolution was not adopted.

The US representative in the UN Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, explained her vote against the fact that Israel’s right to self-defense was not mentioned in the text of the resolution.
