The commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, has been appointed temporary acting commander in chief of the Russian Navy. This is reported by RIA “Novosti”.

TASS clarifies that Moiseev was presented in a new position at a ceremony on the occasion of the Day of the Submarine Sailor in Kronstadt. Earlier, the Russian mass media reported with reference to sources that the previous head of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolay Evmenov, was dismissed. It was not specified what exactly caused the dismissal. Evmenov has held this position since 2019.

Admiral Alexander Moiseev commanded the Russian Black Sea Fleet from May 2018 to May 2019. After that, he was appointed commander of the Northern Fleet. Moiseev has the title of Hero of Russia, the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” of the IV degree and two Orders of Courage.

The replacement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy took place against the background of heavy losses in the Black Sea Fleet. The command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that the Russian ships in the Black Sea were not on duty for several days after the sinking as a result of an attack by naval drones of their next ship – “Sergei Kotov”. Ukrainian intelligence claims that as a result of the attack, seven sailors were killed, and another 27 were wounded. The Ministry of Defense of Russia did not comment on this.

According to the estimates of the Oryx project, since the beginning of the full-scale war with Ukraine, Russia has lost more than a quarter of the Black Sea fleet, including the flagship, the missile cruiser “Moskva”.
