After the Russian ban, books about LGBT+ will be published in the CIS countries

After the ban on the distribution of positive information about LGBT+ in Russia, books about homosexual love will be published and sold in the CIS countries. Theoretically, they can enter Russia. This is reported by Kommersant.

The Popcorn Books publishing house, which published “Summer in a pioneer tie” and “What the swallow is silent about” about homosexual relationships, said that “they are already working with partners in the CIS – and in the future they plan to sell books through local platforms.”

The books of this publisher are not yet presented in the book chains of Belarus and Kazakhstan, but they can already be found in the online stores of these countries. At the same time, the Belarusian KomiksKrama offers delivery of goods to Russia. Lawyers interviewed by the Kommersant newspaper assure that Russians will not be punished for buying books in the CIS.

“We have introduced responsibility for the public distribution of materials justifying LGBT. If the user simply bought a book in the CIS for himself, no responsibility arises,” explained Russian lawyer Maksym Martyanov.

In turn, State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein threatened book publishers with criminal liability if they tried to establish “illegal LGBT traffic” in Russia. According to what article they will be judged, the deputy did not specify.

  • Since December 2022, the dissemination of positive information about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism has been prohibited in Russia. Fines of up to 400,000 rubles for citizens and up to five million rubles for organizations are provided for this.
  • In January 2023, State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein reported that an administrative case had been initiated against Popcorn Books publishing house for an article on LGBT+ propaganda.
  • Also, the publishing house Panther Books will soon start working in Kazakhstan, “Kommersant” learned. Now it is looking for Russian-speaking authors who will write on LGBT+ topics. The publisher does not plan to sell books in Russia.
