At least 125 people died as a result of an explosion in Nagorno-Karabakh that occurred on Monday, September 25, Armenian Health Minister Anait Avanesyan said.

Another 67 victims are in the National Burn Center in Yerevan, the condition of most of them is assessed as serious or extremely serious.

The night before, a powerful explosion occurred at a gas station near the city of Stepanakert, where gasoline was allegedly distributed to refugees trying to leave for Armenia. According to preliminary data, a gasoline truck with fuel exploded. It is still unknown what caused the detonation.

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a military operation to restore sovereignty on the territory of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh republic, where tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians live. On September 20, the leadership of the unrecognized region capitulated on Baku’s terms. The Azerbaijani authorities have declared their readiness to hold negotiations on the reintegration of the Armenian population of Karabakh.

During the last few days, representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities and representatives of the Armenian population held two meetings, at which, among other things, issues of protecting the rights of residents who decided to stay in Karabakh were discussed. Concrete steps have not yet been announced.

According to the latest data, 19 thousand residents of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh have already moved to Armenia, who do not want to be under the jurisdiction of Baku. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the country is ready to accept 40 thousand residents of Karabakh. At the same time, he accused the Azerbaijani authorities of “ethnic cleansing”.

  • Karabakh is considered part of Azerbaijan under international law. The population of the region is mainly made up of ethnic Armenians. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Baku did not control most of the territory, where armed conflicts periodically broke out. Representatives of the Armenian community proclaimed an independent republic, which was not recognized by any country, including Armenia.
