We talked to Olga Podmasterchyk, an oncologist and the head of the MEDICOM Clinic’s oncology department, and asked her how exactly artificial intelligence helps in the diagnosis of oncology and increases patients’ chances of a full recovery.
How is AI used in your clinic?
Algorithms based on artificial intelligence can analyze medical images (CT and MRI) with extraordinary speed and accuracy. These algorithms can detect subtle patterns and anomalies that the human eye might miss, leading to more accurate and timely diagnoses.
The main area of use of artificial intelligence in the “Medicom Clinic” is the analysis and processing of medical data from CT and MRI studies, which is the basis of diagnostics. The program helps to identify nodes, neoplasms, bone secondary changes, which are then interpreted by the doctor.
It is obvious that AI does not replace the doctor. At the same time, it is a powerful support tool when choosing a treatment strategy.
The use of AI in early cancer diagnosis, when the smallest detail or sign can be crucial.
How exactly is artificial intelligence used in cancer treatment?
It is clear that artificial intelligence does not (yet?) cure cancer. The use of its functions significantly increases the informativeness of CT and MRI diagnostics. It’s just another quality level!
AI algorithms quickly process large volumes of clinical data. In particular, medical images, pictures, sections in different projections. This makes it possible to detect the smallest pathological changes and potentially dangerous neoplasms that may remain unnoticed by the human eye.
The artificial intelligence program is able to detect precancerous conditions, minimal nodes that require further study. In addition, at the stage of preoperative examination, AI provides information to oncological surgeons about the localization, size of the tumor, its structure, distribution and connection with other tissues of the body.
How is the process of diagnosis with the help of AI?
For the patient, the diagnostic process, which includes the use of artificial intelligence, does not differ from the usual examination using computer or magnetic resonance imaging.
At the stage of preparation of the conclusion by a radiologist or radiologist, all received images are analyzed by the program. AI detects potential pathological changes and neoplasms. Then the doctor checks the hypotheses and decides on further examinations.
AI very accurately calculates the criteria for evaluating tumor dynamics according to the international standard RECIST.
Does the clinic have successful cases in the application of AI?
One of the recent cases: there was a patient who came for a preventive CT scan of the lungs. A radiologist identified a suspicious area and additionally analyzed the images with the help of an AI program.
Contrast was introduced. After all, malignant tumors during such research accumulate a contrast agent, unlike benign neoplasms or cysts. The patient was referred to an oncologist for further follow-up.
Thanks to early diagnosis and timely medical care, the patient has a positive prognosis. Unfortunately, lung oncology is very often asymptomatic until the moment when complications appear and treatment is then less effective.
So we can say that the AI algorithm “gave” this patient a chance to recover.
Or another 85-year-old patient with multiple breast neoplasms confirmed by mammography and histology. CT diagnosis in this case is prescribed to study the spread of the oncological process.
AI helped not only estimate the exact size of tumors, but also detected secondary neoplasms in the bones.
The patient underwent a course of chemotherapy with confirmed positive dynamics: regression of tumors in the mammary gland, secondary changes in the bones were not detected on repeated CT. After surgical treatment and radiation therapy, the woman has a fairly favorable prognosis.
Cancer diagnosis using AI is not an experiment, but a reliable revolutionary high-tech method that has proven its effectiveness clinically. This technology makes it possible to detect early stages of cancer, which makes timely treatment possible and increases the patient’s chances of a full recovery.
