The Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced the journalist and administrator of the Telegram channel “Adskie Babky” Alexander Bayazitova to five years in prison in the case of extortion from the top manager of Promsvyazbank.
Media manager Olga Arkharova was sentenced to four years in a general regime colony. The prosecution asked for 13 years of imprisonment for Bayazitova and 14 for Arkharova.
Another defendant, PR specialist Inna Churylova, who supervised a number of Telegram channels, was sentenced to a suspended sentence in the summer. Churylova cooperated with the investigation.
The injured vice-president of Promsvyazbank, Alexander Ushakov, also asked for a conditional term for the accused.
Bayazitova, Arkharova and Churylova were arrested in August 2022. Last November, Churilova was replaced with house arrest, the rest of the suspects remained in custody.
According to the investigation, Arkharova and Bayazitov demanded more than a million rubles from the vice-president of Promsvyazbank, Alexander Ushakov, so that negative information about the bank would not be published on the Telegram channel “Hell’s Grandmas”, dedicated to economic news.
Bayazitova is an independent journalist. She covered economic issues, in particular, in “Kommersant”, “Izvestia” and Life.ru. She did not admit her guilt. According to Bayazitova, the reason for her criminal prosecution could be her articles about the theft of state defense orders, in which, as she found out, Promsvyazbank was involved.
