Because of the sanctions, 67% of companies switched to Chinese equipment

The absolute majority of industrial enterprises in Russia replaced the equipment, spare parts and components, the import of which fell under sanctions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Chinese counterparts. This follows from a January poll by the Gaidar Institute, the results of which are reported by Kommersant.

According to the survey, 67% of respondents now purchase equipment in China, 63% spare parts, and 54% components. At the same time, 39%, 46% and 54% of the survey participants chose Russian analogues, respectively.

23% of respondents admitted that they continue to receive components from the sanctioned list, for equipment and spare parts this share is less. It also turned out that a fifth of the enterprises never used sub-sanctioned components. Some companies had to stop importing goods altogether.

In 2022, polls by the Gaidar Institute determined that switching to Chinese analogues is a forced measure, companies would prefer European goods even at high prices.

  • Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In response, the United States and Europe regularly impose sanctions prohibiting or limiting cooperation with Russian organizations.
  • After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 1,200 organizations closed their activities in Russia, of which 372 completely left the country.
  • At the beginning of May, the Ministry of Industry and Trade published a list of goods and brands that can be imported into Russia as part of the so-called “parallel import”, that is, without the permission of the right holder. The list is periodically edited.
