Billionaire Igor Makarov, head of the Arety energy company, has renounced his Russian citizenship. RBC writes about this, referring to the information in Makarov’s profile on the website of the American Forbes.

The businessman’s profile states that he refused his Russian passport this year and now has only one citizenship – Cyprus. RBC sent a request to Makarov’s representative.

In the ranking of the richest people in the world according to the version of the American Forbes, Igor Makarov is now listed as a Cypriot billionaire: he occupies the fifth place among the richest Cypriots and 1368th in the global ranking. Three years ago, the Cypriot media reported that the billionaire was among 34 “suspicious” cases of the issuance of Cypriot citizenship in exchange for investments between 2008 and 2012.

RBC notes that in 2022 Makarov fell under the sanctions of Great Britain and Canada, but escaped sanctions from the EU and the USA.

Igor Makarov is not the first Russian businessman who decided to renounce his Russian citizenship after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The founder and former owner of the Troika Dialog investment company, Ruben Vardanyan, the founder of the fintech startup Revolut, Nikolai Storonsky, and the founder of Tinkoff Bank, Oleg Tynkov, are among the others who have applied for renunciation of citizenship.
