Economist Sergey Guriev became dean of the London Business School

Russian economist Sergey Guriev has been appointed dean of the London Business School. This is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world in the field of economics and finance. Guriev was a prominent economist in Russia, which he left after being persecuted in connection with the Yukos case and his criticism of the Kremlin’s economic policy.

Sergey Guriev has been the head of the Russian School of Economics since 2004. Acting as an expert in the second criminal case of Yukos founders Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev in 2012, he questioned the guilt of the businessmen and the legality of their sentence. After that, Guriev was searched, the scientist was repeatedly summoned to the Investigative Committee for questioning.

In 2013, he moved to France, saying that he fears for his freedom and the opportunity to fully work in Russia. In Paris, Guriev became a professor at Sciences Po University. In 2016-2019, he was the leading economist of the World Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He also publishes columns in the international press, where he expresses his opinion about Russia’s economic policy and its influence on the world economic process. Guriev was a guest of Radio Svoboda several times.

In 2023, the Ministry of Justice of Russia entered Guriev in the register of so-called foreign agents.
