The court in Yekaterinburg today began hearing a criminal case under the article on the discrediting of the army against the former mayor of the city Evgeny Roizman. Before the meeting, the politician said: “All the risks are clear, the article is up to three years old. The mood is normal. I understand everything,” Interfax quotes his words. At the trial, Roizman stated that he did not admit guilt.
The reason for initiating a criminal case for the so-called discrediting of the army was a video published by Roizman on the YouTube channel, in which he spoke about the war in Ukraine.
As the Yekaterinburg publication It’s My City writes, according to the indictment, Roizman “discredited” the Russian army by calling “special operations” in Ukraine a war, and the symbol Z – “zygoy”.
A criminal case against Roizman was opened in August last year. Previously, the court fined Roizman three times under an administrative article for discrediting the armed forces of Russia – for a total of 150,000 rubles. Now he faces up to three years in prison. During the investigation, the court prohibited Roizman from using the Internet, visiting public places and communicating with everyone except the lawyer.
In March, a court in Yekaterinburg sent Roizman to 14 days under arrest on charges of displaying extremist symbols.
- Yevgeny Roizman is a well-known regional politician, former deputy of the State Duma, former mayor of Yekaterinburg, member of the Union of Writers and honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
- He was considered one of the last Russian politicians who opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine and remained free. Roizman refused to leave Russia.
