Critical infrastructure, bridges and roads have been significantly destroyed by the war. Where possible, bridge builders and road workers promptly restore damaged objects. Among the specialists who led the restoration work were employees of the “Avtostrada” group of companies. Already more than a year after the Great War, they continue to make their contribution in various strategic areas to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this work, because in the front-line areas, roads and bridges become “ways of life”, providing important needs of citizens: access to water, electricity, medical care, evacuation of the population, movement of military equipment. And after the war, roads and bridges will become an important element of restoring life, supporting the economy and social stability.

In total, since the beginning of the Great War, “Autostrada” workers have rebuilt 30 infrastructure facilities. Specialists of the group of companies also participate in the protection of energy facilities and in the restoration of traffic in regions where hostilities continued. Often, road and bridge builders begin important work immediately after the pyrotechnic units.

Jobs for road and bridge workers appear everywhere, from where it is possible to dislodge the occupying forces of Russia. Those, retreating, are finally trying to make life as difficult as possible for local residents and to cut off all the arteries connecting the area with the rest of Ukraine.

This was the case in Kharkiv Oblast, Zhytomyr Oblast, Chernihiv Oblast and Kherson Oblast. As road workers say, to restore the roads, they have to work not only around the clock, but also in extremely difficult conditions, and their work is in the focus of attention of the society and the country’s leadership.

Among the objects restored by “Avtostrada”, company employees mention the strategic bridge on the “Warshavska” highway (Zhytomyr region). It was rebuilt as quickly as possible, the work lasted only three months.

“Ensuring full-fledged traffic in this direction was a priority task at the national level, which was the focus of attention of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Ministry of Infrastructure, because this international highway connects five regions of Ukraine and leads to the checkpoint on the border with Poland,” they say in “Autostrada”.

And in de-occupied Balaklia, the company installed a temporary, but important for logistics, metal “Czech” bridge in just a month. It was built next to the one destroyed by explosions during active fighting.

“This is the first such bridge in the liberated territories of Kharkiv region. This work helped to connect Balaklia with Kharkiv as quickly as possible. The main thing is that residents of one of the most densely populated areas of the city, which is called Lagery, now have no problems getting to hospitals, pharmacies, shops, markets, social security institutions,” the company explains.

A similar story is in the Kherson region. When the happy news about the liberation of Kherson arrived, the Avtostrada team was the first to start restoring full traffic in the region so that the people of Kherson, tired of the occupation, would receive everything they needed in a timely manner.

In the Kherson region, the Avtostrada team, under constant rocket fire, cleared highways and streets of burned equipment, dismantled destroyed metal fences, equipped roadsides and entrances to buildings, and repaired pitted asphalt pavement.

Works are still ongoing in Chernihiv Oblast, which was liberated a year ago. Currently, Avtostrada is rebuilding five bridges in the region. Difficult objects from an engineering point of view have to be built almost from scratch.

“The military was forbidden to talk about them in detail. But what is known for sure is that engineers at these facilities perform extremely difficult tasks 24/7. The involved divers at one of the facilities at a depth of 10 meters are blowing up and sawing into pieces 400-ton bridge concrete supports for their further dismantling,” the road workers share.

This is not the entire list of objects on which road specialists worked and are still working. Work continues, although calculations during the war are very slow and incomplete. Currently, the state’s debt to Avtostrada for 2021 is more than 2 billion.

“During 2022, the company worked at its own expense. Thus, Avtostrada supported a country in which a grueling war continues,” the company notes.

According to road users, “Avtostrada” can perform tasks of any complexity thanks to the highly professional skills of its specialists in working with expensive specialized equipment for bridge and road construction: multi-ton cranes, floating vehicles, drilling machines, vibratory submersibles, pile driving machines. The company’s team consists of 5,000 people.

Processes are facilitated by access to materials coming from own enterprises. These are about 50 factories capable of providing a full cycle of work: crushed stone quarries, concrete and asphalt factories, factories for the production of metal structures, our own design institute.

After the start of the great war, about a thousand specialists of the company joined the defense of Ukraine. Aid to the military is a priority for “Autostrada”.

“The state should feel the responsibility of business, that is why the company sent more than 700 million hryvnias of its own funds to help units of the Armed Forces. During the year of the war, we paid more than 1 billion hryvnias in taxes, saved thousands of jobs, and daily perform numerous tasks related to increasing the country’s defense capabilities. All this is our contribution to the future Victory.

The company states that despite the threats associated with the war, all businesses of the group have survived. And those workers who are fighting will be able to return to work after the Victory.

Stories of Avtostrada employees who serve in the Armed Forces

Unfortunately, it was not without losses – the full-scale war left its mark on the “Autostrada” team. During the year, six employees of the company died. Four gave their lives for Ukraine at the front during combat missions. Two more specialists were blown up by an enemy mine, directly during road works in the newly liberated city of Izyum.

The stories of workers selflessly rebuilding infrastructure in the de-occupied and front-line territories, fighting in the ranks of the Ukrainian army are impressive in a good way. But no less important is the work of those specialists who continue to work in the rear areas.

“The result of the workers of the road and bridge industry is an important element of restoring the economy and stability in the country during and after the war. It is their work that depends on the safety of the movement of citizens in large cities, and again, the opportunity to connect “peaceful” territories with “military” ones So wherever it is necessary, the work of “Autostrada” road workers is boiling over. For example, on construction of the left-bank road junction on the capital’s Darnytsky Bridge, which has been in a state of long-standing construction for more than 10 years. We plan to complete the construction of two congresses already in July this year,” the company says.

Another example is repairs on the P-10 highway “Cherkasy-Chigyrin-Kremenchuk”. In September 2022, the builders of “Autostrada” resumed traffic on this road, installing a temporary iron bridge over the Rosava River.

“R-10 is an important regional road that connects the region with Kirovohrad region and Poltava region. It was extremely necessary to ensure its functionality in order to avoid a transport collapse in the region,” the road workers emphasize.

Also, the “Autostrada” team ensured traffic on the main road that now connects Chernihiv with Kyiv and the communities of the region on the right bank of the Desna River. Two bridges are being rebuilt in the Kharkiv region, one of which is a 200-meter bridge built in the 1960s, which was blown up by the military during an enemy offensive. Work continues on other objects as well.

Today, the work of road and bridge builders is extremely important, because the result of their work affects the speed of delivery of military and humanitarian goods, which in turn brings our common Victory closer.
