Powerful hurricane “Kieran” affected Spain, Italy, France and other countries of central and southern Europe. In the Italian province of Tuscany, the storm caused flooding. It is already known about at least five dead. The total number of dead in the country of Europe is already more than 10.
Wind speed reaches 207 kilometers per hour. Such figures were recorded on the northwestern coast of France. The hurricane also affected the south of England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal. In Belgium, two people died from falling trees, one of them – a five-year-old child.
In many regions, due to the hurricane, there is no electricity, public transport runs with interruptions. Forest fires started in Spain due to the hurricane. The authorities have already evacuated about 800 residents of villages located near the burning forests. Another 2,500 people were ordered to stay at home and prepare for evacuation. In France, more than a million homes were left without electricity.
Slovenia and Croatia also suffer from heavy rains. The main river of the Croatian capital Zagreb – the Sava – burst its banks.
According to scientists, such strong storms are not yet common in Europe, but in the future they may be repeated more often due to climate change. Global warming leads to the fact that the temperature difference in the south and north of Europe increases, which is why anomalous atmospheric fronts are formed at the border of warm and cold regions. They cause hurricanes and torrential rains.
