In an hour, the population of Russia decreased by 555 thousand people

As of January 1, 2023, 146.4 million people lived in Russia, writes RBC with reference to Rosstat data. The figures are given taking into account the all-Russian population census-2021 and the annexed Crimea, but without taking into account the four occupied regions of Ukraine, which the Kremlin considers regions of Russia.

For the whole of 2022, the population of Russia, which takes into account the natural movement of the population and migration, decreased by 555 thousand people. At the same time, in the incomplete 2022 alone, the natural decrease amounted to more than 543 thousand people, and the migration outflow (experts note that it does not take into account refugees from Ukraine and Russians who left because of the war) – more than 20 thousand.

On the basis of Rosstat data for previous years, RBC made an infographic, from which it follows that the number of Russians is decreasing for the fifth year in a row: last year, the decrease was a record since 2002 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a decrease in the birth rate.

In 2022, the population of Rostov region decreased more significantly than other regions of Russia – by 28.6 thousand people. Nizhny Novgorod and Saratov regions followed.

The population of Moscow grew more than the others – by 82.4 thousand people. Now the capital has almost 13.1 million inhabitants. Population growth is also noted in the Moscow region and Dagestan.

  • In 2022, after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the announcement of the mobilization of Russians for the war, at least 512 thousand people left Russia. This follows from the data of the countries to which the Russians fled, collected by The Bell.
