In Budapest, tens of thousands of people took part in an action against Orban

Tens of thousands of people gathered in the center of Budapest for a protest against Viktor Orban’s government, Reuters reports.

Protesters marched to the parliament, some of them shouted: “We are not afraid” and “Orbán resigns!”. Many waved Hungarian flags.

The demonstration was led by a former member of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, Peter Magyar, who worked in various state institutions and banks. Now he plans to create his own political party and challenge the Fidesz party in the elections to the European Parliament and local municipalities, which will be held in June this year.

In March, Peter Magyar published an archive recording in which his ex-wife Yudit Varga, who recently resigned from the post of the country’s minister of justice, accuses members of the prime minister’s inner circle of a corruption scandal. He also handed over this record to law enforcement agencies.

According to Magyar, this recording proves that the head of the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Antal Rohan, forged documents related to the corruption case involving the former state secretary at the Ministry of Justice, Pal Welner.

According to the Median sociological survey, which was published in mid-March, 68% of voters heard about Magyar’s entry into the political arena, and 13% of them said that they would most likely support his party.
