In Chechnya, a person accused of participating in an armed attack on a convoy of the Perm riot police in 2000 received a life sentence. He was found guilty under the articles of sedition for the purpose of changing the constitutional system of Russia and encroachment on the lives of law enforcement officers.

The name of the convicted person is not known, reports Kavkaz.Realii. He will serve his sentence in a penal colony under special regime.

The attack on the riot police convoy, which went to clear the village, took place on March 29, 2000 near the village of Jany-Vedeno. It was led by field commanders Shamil Basaev and Khattab (Samer Saleh al-Suweilem). 31 policemen and Russian soldiers were killed, 12 more were captured and killed later. About a hundred people were wounded. Losses from the attackers are unknown.

After the battle, the Kremlin reported three dead and 20 wounded. As reported by the Military News Agency, the command of the federal forces in Chechnya found out about the ambush in which the Perm riot police fell by chance from the pilot of a helicopter flying by.

The route of the convoy was not coordinated, the cars followed without protection, not complying with the regulations. The officers did not know the radio frequencies of the military covering the area, and the entire detachment had only one long-range radio station, which was destroyed at the beginning of the battle. No one was convicted for this.

The direct role of the person convicted of the attack is not reported. In August, another Chechen, Rashid Atuov, was sentenced to 20 years for participating in the same battle. It was not reported which court heard the case. Atuov’s specific role in the attack is also not named.
