In Ingushetia, the first sentence in the region was handed down in the case of treason
The Supreme Court of Ingushetia sentenced a resident of the republic, Beslan Tsechoev, to five years in prison in the case of preparation for treason by switching to the enemy’s side and illegal storage of weapons.
Tsechoev admitted his guilt. The prosecution requested for him seven and a half years of imprisonment with a restriction of freedom for two years, reports Kavkaz.Realii.
It is not specified what exactly the accusation consists of. The court emphasized that this is the first sentence in the republic in the case of treason.
- After the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, cases of treason regularly appear in media reports. In 2023, at least 148 people in Russia were charged with treason, espionage and secret cooperation with foreigners, and at least 88 such cases were brought to court, Sibir.Realii calculated. This is a historical record for the number of similar criminal cases. Human rights activists believe that the real number of cases can be much larger, and the pace of prosecution will continue to grow in 2024.
- Kavkaz.Realii experts previously reported that, despite the obvious activation of special services in search of so-called Ukrainian agents, the real number of cases for extremism and state treason, initiated due to ties with Ukraine, will be known only after two years.
