The Cassation Court in Kemerovo upheld the sentence of journalist Maria Ponomarenko, who was sentenced to six years in prison in the case of the so-called fakes about the Russian army. This is reported by Sibir.Realii with reference to lawyer Dmitry Shitov.

In February 2023, journalist and mother of two Maria Ponomarenko was found guilty of an article about “fakes” about the Russian army motivated by political hatred due to a post on the Telegram channel about the death of people in a drama theater in Mariupol. She is serving her term in the Altai Krai.

Ponomarenko was repeatedly sent to a detention center. In total, she spent more than a month there, although the maximum period of stay in an isolator for women is five days. Also, Ponomarenko reported that the colony has unsanitary conditions, it is constantly searched and personal hygiene products are taken away.

  • In early November 2023, the IC stated that Ponomarenko attacked two employees of the colony, who forcibly took her to the disciplinary commission. In relation to the journalist, a second criminal case was opened for causing harm that is not dangerous to health. The maximum punishment under this article is up to five years of imprisonment.
