In six months, Roskomnadzor blocked more than 885 thousand websites

In the first half of 2023, Roskomnadzor blocked 85% more websites than in the same period of 2022. The department itself told “Kommersant” about this.

According to Roskomnadzor, more than 885,000 sites and about 1.1 million separate materials were blocked at its request in six months – 10% more than in all of 2022.

Roskomnadzor blocks information on the Internet that the Russian authorities consider prohibited. Decisions on this are made by the courts, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Federal Tax Service, Rosmolodyozh and other agencies. They limit Russians’ access to “extremist information”, pornography, information about drugs and pirated content.

In addition, the authorities are asking to prohibit Runet users from reading “foreign agents”, texts about the LGBT community and news about the war in Ukraine, which do not coincide with the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

Censorship records may soon be updated, as the Russian authorities have also banned sites that distribute information about bypassing the blocks. Roskomnadzor has been blocking VPN services themselves for a long time. However, users are unlikely to have full access to the VPN, according to experts polled by “Kommersant”.
