In Yoshkar-Ola, the police on Monday detained local resident Kirill Voytovych, who participated in laying flowers at the memorial to those repressed under Stalin. As Idel.Realii reports, the reason for the detention could be a poster in the Belarusian language.

On October 30, the descendants of those repressed by the Soviet authorities gathered at the monument to the victims of political repressions in the capital Mary El. Nikolai Arakcheev, the founder of the Gulag People’s Museum, which was closed a few years ago, said that such actions are held annually. The monument was attended by the director of the Yoshkar-Oly History Museum, former head of the city administration’s culture department, Vladimir Khrulyov. After laying flowers, most of the participants of the action went to the city history museum (it is located a few tens of meters from the memorial). At that moment, police officers approached one of them, Kirill Voytovych.

Yoshkar-Olynets brought with him a poster in the Belarusian language: “Night of Paetau. 29-30 Kastrychinka. Eternal memory to the victims of Bolshevik terror. Live forever” (“Night of poets or Black night, October 29-30. Eternal memory to the victims of Bolshevik terror. Live forever” “). He placed the poster in one of the niches of the memorial, where there are books about repressions and portraits of victims of Stalin’s terror.

According to the participants of the laying of flowers at the memorial, Voytovych was put in an approaching police car and sent to the police station – presumably to conduct a “preventive discussion”.

  • “Night of the Shot Poets” or “Black Night” on October 29-30, 1937 – one of the most significant repressions during the Stalinist terror in Belarus. At that time, at least 132 poets, writers and representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia, accused of “anti-Soviet activities”, were shot in the NKVD internal prison in Minsk. In 1988, they were all rehabilitated by the Military Board of the Supreme Court of the USSR.
