IOC: sports sanctions against the Russian Federation and Belarusians are not subject to discussion
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated that sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes, which were approved in 2022, are not subject to discussion, reports .
“Sanctions against the states and governments of Russia and Belarus are not subject to discussion. They were unanimously confirmed by the recent Olympic summit on December 9, 2022,” the IOC said in a Twitter message.
According to these sanctions, there are the following prohibitions:
- International sports events organized or supported by Olympic committees cannot be held in Russia and Belarus
- Russians and Belarusians may not use their anthems, colors or other symbols of their countries at any sporting events and meetings organized by the IOC
- Government or state officials of Russia and Belarus cannot be accredited to any international meeting or sports event
It is noted that the published statement of the IOC is a reaction to the comments of the president of the NOC of Russia, Stanislav Pozdniakov, that Russians should participate in the 2024 Olympics on an equal basis with everyone else.
The IOC published a statement in which it was assumed that the Russians and Belarusians would be able to compete at the Olympics in Paris under a neutral flag.
Later, the IOC commented on the possible admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. The organization noted that the performance under the neutral flag proved itself well.
The Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, Vadym Gutzait, stated that Ukraine may refuse to participate in the 2024 Olympics, which should be held in Paris, due to the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the competition.
