Israel offered the Palestinian group Hamas, recognized as a terrorist in the United States and the European Union, to suspend hostilities in the Gaza Strip for a week in exchange for approximately 40 hostages. This is reported by Axios with reference to sources.

As the publication notes, the offer was made through Qatari intermediaries. As part of the deal, the Israeli authorities expect to release about 40 people, including women, men over 60 years old and those who need urgent medical care.

Israel also suggested that it could release Palestinian prisoners convicted of more serious crimes than those released during the first truce.

According to sources of the publication, during the negotiations, the Prime Minister of Qatar voiced the position of Hamas regarding the truce, according to which Israel must stop its attacks before negotiations on the hostages begin.

David Barnea, the head of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, responded that if Hamas wants to end the war, it must lay down its arms and hand over to Israel its leaders in the Gaza Strip, responsible for the attack on October 7.

  • More than 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were killed during the attack by Hamas militants on Israel. 240 people were taken hostage.
  • As part of the previous deal concluded at the end of November, Hamas militants released 105 hostages.
