The Japanese government plans to ban the export to Russia of diesel and gasoline cars, including used ones, with an engine capacity of more than 1.9 liters. All hybrid cars and electric cars will also fall under the restrictions, writes Sibir.Realii with reference to local media.
Restrictions are introduced because of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The relevant resolution will be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in July, and it will enter into force in August.
Since April last year, Japan has banned the export of luxury cars worth more than 6 million yen (about 43 thousand dollars) to Russia.
- Since the beginning of the war, Japan, along with other countries, began to impose sanctions against Russia and Russian and pro-Russian politicians, deputies and officials. In particular, Japan has banned the supply of vaccines, medical equipment, equipment for nuclear facilities and oil and natural gas exploration to Russia.
- President Vladimir Putin, the country’s top officials and their relatives fell under the personal sanctions of Japan. Russia also retained the status of the most favored nation in trade. At the same time, Tokyo announced that it would provide military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
- In turn, Russia included Japan in the list of “unfriendly countries” and declared that it was leaving the dialogue with Japan on the establishment of joint economic activities in the South Kuril Islands. Russia also banned Japanese sailors from fishing in the Southern Kurils. Such a right was given to them by the Russian-Japanese agreement of 1998.
