Charles University in the Czech Republic has accredited the master’s program named after Boris Nemtsov “Russian Studies”. This was reported by the Boris Nemtsov Foundation.

The program is aimed at a comprehensive study of Russia and the former Soviet republics. Students will study their political regimes, the role of the church, foreign policy, the economic situation, the state of society and mass media.

The training will be conducted in Russian, some subjects in English. The program is designed for two years. The cost of training is about 4.7 thousand euros per hour, the Foundation is ready to provide scholarships to several applicants. Applications can be submitted from the beginning of July.

According to the head of the Foundation Zhanna Nemtsova, the program was created in response to the destruction of humanitarian education in Russia and the growing demand to study the region in the context of Russian military aggression against Ukraine.

  • After the start of the war, the Russian authorities intensified their intrusion into the education system: dozens of teachers with opposition views were fired from universities, and institutions regularly expel students for anti-war speeches.
  • In addition, after the war, the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University abandoned the “Political Journalism” module, HSE removed the academic track “Human Rights and Democratic Management”, St. Petersburg State University closed the Faculty of Free Sciences and Arts, and the Russian Academy of Sciences eliminated the Liberal Arts program.
  • Former teachers of the latter open a three-year Bachelor of Liberal Arts & Sciences in Montenegro – in Montenegrin, Russian and English.
