The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia proposed to the government to suspend the law “On repatriation”, reports Delfi with reference to the department. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the majority of applications for repatriation have recently come from Russians.
“In 2022, the fate of Russian citizens has already reached 81% of the total number of those who received the status of a repatriate or a family member of a repatriate,” said the Ministry of Internal Affairs, emphasizing that the number of such applications increased sharply after the start of the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, the number of cases of forgery of documents is increasing, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports. For this reason, the agency canceled or froze about 200 applications approved earlier.
- The law adopted in 1995 allows people whose ancestors were ethnic Latvians or Livs to obtain Latvian citizenship. In order to submit an application, a potential repatriate must, among other things, collect documents proving kinship and ethnicity of ancestors.
- In 2022, Russian citizens submitted 430 applications under the law “On Repatriation”. Of them, 220 people received the status of repatriate or family member of a repatriate.
