Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashyna and lawyer Alexander Nemov, who were beaten the day before in Chechnya, are hospitalized in one of the Moscow hospitals. This was reported by the former editor-in-chief of “Echo of Moscow” Aleksey Venediktov.
He also said that private individuals paid for the plane that took Milashyna and Nemov from Beslan to Moscow.
According to Venediktov, after the former editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, decided to transport Milashyna and Nemov to Moscow, the search for the plane began. Venediktov made a list of 12 people “who could help” (he does not name them) and started calling.
The first interlocutor, who is engaged in the organization of commercial flights, answered Venediktov’s question about the cost that “everything has already been regulated.” “Therefore, to say that I know who paid for this flight [я не могу] — these are private individuals, but I don’t even know the price,” Venediktov said in an interview with “Dozhdy”.
On the morning of June 4, Elena Milashyna and Alexander Nemov arrived in Chechnya for the announcement of the sentence of Zarema Musaeva, the wife of the former judge of the Supreme Court of the republic Saida Yangulbaev and the mother of Chechen activists and critics of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Yangulbayev brothers. On the way from the airport to Grozny, Milashyna and Nemov were attacked by unknown persons.
The journalist received a head injury and severe bruises on her fingers. According to her, they also threatened to cut off her finger to unlock the phone. The attackers shaved Milashina’s head and doused her with green liquid. Alexander Nemov was severely beaten and stabbed in the leg.
According to the journalist, the attackers were only interested in equipment and official documents. Milashyna is sure that the attack on her and lawyer Nemov is directly related to their professional activities on the territory of Chechnya. At the same time, the journalist emphasized that what she experienced will not affect her future work. In the near future, she is going to come to Grozny again to continue covering the court process, namely, the appeal against Zarema Musaeva’s sentence.
The Investigative Committee of Russia has begun an investigation into what happened to Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov, but nothing is known about the initiation of a criminal case.
