Arrested lawyers of opposition politician Alexei Navalny – Vadym Kobzev, Igor Sergunin and Alexey Liptser – were transferred from the Moscow pre-trial detention center “Medved” to the federal pre-trial detention center-1, known as “Kremlin Central”. The Russian service of the BBC writes about this with reference to the lawyer Andrey Hryvtsov, who defends Kobzev.

The “Kremlin Central” is actually a special block of federal subordination on the territory of the “Matrosskaya Tishina” detention center in Moscow. There are only one hundred people there. According to Hryvtsov, “Kremlin Central” differs from other pre-trial detention centers in its stricter regime and strong censorship.

“Attorneys are checked more strictly upon entry, they watch very hard to make sure that no one passes anything on to anyone,” the lawyer said.

Alexei Navalny was sent to the “Kremlin Central” after his arrest in January 2021. Ex-head of Yukos Mikhail Khodorkovsky, ex-minister of economic development Aleksey Ulyukaev, ex-governor of Sakhalin Alexander Khoroshavin and ex-head of Serpukhov District of Moscow Oblast Alexander Shestun were also held there.

  • Navalny’s lawyers were detained on October 13, after which the court arrested them for two months on charges of “participation in an extremist community” – the authorities consider Navalny’s headquarters and the Anti-Corruption Fund created by him to be such a community. The case is directly related to the professional activities of the lawyers – the investigation suspects them of the fact that they “ensured the regular transfer of information between the leaders, members of the extremist community and Navalny, who thus continued to exercise the functions of his leader and leader” while in the colony.
