Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu was hospitalized in Tel Aviv’s Sheba clinic on Saturday evening. He was fitted with a pacemaker to control cardiac arrhythmia. According to The Jerusalem Post, the operation was successful. Netanyahu hopes to be discharged from the hospital on Monday in time for the Knesset vote on judicial reform.
The judicial reform, which parliamentarians will vote on on July 24, has become the subject of mass protests in Israel. Opponents of the reform believe that it will lead to a decrease in judicial control over government decisions, and the courts will actually lose their independence. Netanyahu and his allies – ultra-nationalist and ultra-orthodox parties – on the contrary, argue that the reform is necessary to limit the “excessive” powers of judges.
Demonstrations against the reform project began in March of this year. On one day, March 26, more than 600,000 demonstrators took to the streets. A strike was declared in the country. Then Netanyahu decided to postpone consideration of the judicial reform until the summer session of the Knesset. With its beginning, protests resumed. On July 20, tens of thousands of Israelis marched in protest from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. They set up a tent camp near the parliament building.
