RUSADA acquitted Valieva in the case of violation of anti-doping rules

The Disciplinary Anti-Doping Committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) acquitted figure skater Kamila Valieva in the case of violation of anti-doping rules. This is reported on the website of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

RUSADA decided that the athlete, although she violated anti-doping rules, she bears “no blame” for this.

“Thus, the committee did not impose any sanctions, with the exception of the annulment of her results on the date of sampling (December 25, 2021),” the WADA press service said in a statement. On this day, Valieva became the champion of Russia – now she must keep this medal.

WADA stated that it requested a copy of the full reasoned decision from RUSADA, which the agency will review together with the case file to determine whether the decision complies with the provisions of the World Anti-Doping Code.

“However, based on the elements of the case, with which WADA is already familiar, the agency is concerned about the conclusion of “no fault or negligence” and will not hesitate to exercise its right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, depending on the situation,” – says the statement in WADA.

  • Valieva is suspected of using trimetazidine, a drug banned in sports. The substance was detected in her sample on December 25, 2021, but it became known only in February 2022, during the Olympic Games in Beijing, a few days before the figure skaters competed. Valieva was still allowed to participate in the competition, where she took fourth place. The figure skater explained that trimetazidine got into her body by the fact that it was part of the medicine that her grandfather took, and as a result, the so-called household pollution occurred.
  • In November 2022, WADA needed to find Valieva guilty of violating anti-doping rules and disqualify her for four years with annulment of the results from the moment of passing a positive doping test. Then WADA said that the agency transferred Valieva’s case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport due to the fact that RUSADA had not made any progress in the figure skater’s case.
