Several Russians and Belarusians signed a declaration of “neutrality” to participate in Wimbledon

Several Russian and Belarusian tennis players signed the declaration of “neutrality” for participation in the Wimbledon tennis tournament. This was reported by Sally Bolton, executive director of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), the organizer of Wimbledon, reports

“After we announced our decision, the players were able to sign the declarations, and they can do it before the application deadline. I will not reveal the details of who has already done this, but a number of players have already signed the document. We listened to the athletes’ feedback over the last hour and they said that they want to be able to sign a declaration. They fully understand what they are signing up for,” said Sally Bolton, quoted by Reuters.

Athletes will compete under a neutral flag, and they will also be prohibited from speaking in support of the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine. Athletes who receive funding from Russia or Belarus, as well as from companies controlled by their governments, will not be allowed to participate in Wimbledon.

The All England Club will donate £1 (US$1.87) to Ukraine for every ticket sold for the tournament.

On March 31, the All-English Club sent out a statement in which it announced that it would admit players from Russia and Belarus to Wimbledon this year “as neutral athletes and subject to the appropriate conditions.”

In 2022, Russians and Belarusians were not allowed to participate in Wimbledon. In response, the international associations ATP and WTA fined the tournament and left it with rating points.
