The Government of Russia approved changes in the field of military accounting. According to them, men between the ages of 18 and 30 will be conscripted into the army starting in 2024. Previously, the upper threshold for conscription was 27 years old.
The government’s resolution is necessary for the implementation of the federal law, which was adopted by the State Duma and signed by the President of Russia back in the summer. Initially, it was also supposed to raise the minimum conscription age so that Russians would join the army not at 18, but at 21. However, this proposal was rejected in the second reading. The head of the State Duma defense committee, Andrey Kartapolov, explained this by the fact that, due to the demographic situation, fewer Russians are being drafted into the army.
- After the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian government adopted a number of changes to the legislation concerning military service. Conscripts are allowed to transfer to contract service from the first day, and not after completing training. Fines for not appearing at the military enlistment office on a summons were increased 10 times – from three to 30,000 rubles. A special regime of military registration was introduced for prisoners serving sentences in prisons and colonies – previously they did not have the right to serve in the army.
