Sweden allowed NATO to deploy troops

Sweden allowed NATO to deploy troops and military bases on its territory – even before the official accession to NATO. This was reported by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Minister of Defense Paul Junson on Friday.
According to them, these are “preparatory measures”. In an article published in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter, officials stated that the deployment of NATO troops in Sweden would increase the country’s defense capability and would be a “clear signal to Russia.” They noted that in the foreseeable future Russia will pose a threat to neighboring countries, as the “territorial claims” of Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be predicted.
- After the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Sweden and neighboring Finland announced their intention to join NATO, abandoning the neutrality they had adhered to for many years.
- In April of this year, Finland officially became the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Sweden remains a candidate: its accession to NATO has not yet been ratified by Turkey and Hungary.
