The State Duma Committee on Health Protection approved amendments to the draft law on the prohibition of transgender transition in Russia and recommended its adoption in the second reading.
According to the amendments, transpersons in Russia will be prohibited from adopting and adopting children. In addition, if at least one of the spouses has made a transgender transition, their marriage will be annulled. If a Russian changed his gender marker abroad, these changes will not be reflected in the passport.
The State Duma adopted the draft law on banning transit in the first reading in June: all 365 deputies present voted “for”. The second reading should take place on July 13.
If the draft law passes three readings in the State Duma, is approved by the Federation Council and signed by the President of Russia, transit in the country will be effectively prohibited. It will be available only for “treatment of congenital physiological anomalies of sex formation in children”.
Experts believe that the ban on transit will lead to an increase in the number of mental disorders and suicides, as well as the emergence of a black market for underground medical services in Russia.
- Since December 2022, the dissemination of positive information about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism has been prohibited in Russia. Fines of up to 400,000 rubles for citizens and up to five million rubles for organizations are provided for this.
