Artyom Sachuk, vice-president of the Ukrainian Chess Federation, died during the war with Russia. This is reported by the Ukrainian mass media.

In the message of the Federation of Chess on Facebook, Sachuk was called a volunteer warrior. It is noted that he was the organizer of many all-Ukrainian and international competitions.

Sachuk was born in Zhytomyr. Candidate for master of sports in chess. Shortly after the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, he joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a volunteer and had the rank of lieutenant. His death was confirmed at the Zhytomyr military enlistment office, the circumstances of which are now being investigated.

  • The International Chess Federation FIDE is headed by Russian Arkady Dvorkovich. He condemned the war, although he did not directly criticize the Russian authorities. In March of last year, in an interview with the American magazine Mother Jones, Dvorkovich said that wars “kill hopes and aspirations, freeze or destroy relationships and connections.” The Federation has officially terminated sponsorship contracts with Russian and Belarusian companies. At the same time, Russian chess players can compete in competitions under a neutral flag. According to the position of the Chess Federation of Ukraine, Dvorkovich is “a direct servant of the Kremlin and complicit in the crime of Russia.” At the same time, Ukraine noted a complete ban on the participation of its chess players in competitions.
