The Dossier established the names of the Wagnerites who interrogated and killed the Syrian

The Dossier investigative center established and published the names of 10 mercenaries of PMC Wagner, who, according to the investigators, were involved in the torture and execution of a Syrian citizen in 2017. This became possible thanks to the leakage of PMC internal documents. “Dossier” got access to the leak together with European mass media: Die Welt, Paris Match and Arte.

A video of the torture and brutal murder of a Syrian appeared on the Internet on June 30, 2017. The victim in the video is a citizen of Syria, Mohammed Taha Ismail Al-Abdullah. As reported, he was mobilized into the Syrian army, deserted, but was caught by the fighters of “PMC Wagner”. In the video, his legs are broken with a sledgehammer, his hands and head are cut off, his body is dismembered and burned, and his head is put on a pole. The people who committed the murder posed next to the corpse with open faces.

In 2019, “Novaya Gazeta” reported on the murder and was able to establish the name of one of the participants – a former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Stanislav Dychko. The Dossier Center found the names and callsigns of nine more accomplices. All of them belonged to the 4th assault detachment of “Wagner PMC”. As of 2019, only one of them was fired from the PMC, the reasons for the dismissal are not mentioned in PMC documents.

The commander of the 4th assault detachment was Mykola Budko. According to journalists, he did not suffer any punishment and continued to command an assault detachment, performing tasks in Syria and Africa.

The founder of PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin has not yet commented on the Dossier investigation.

  • International law classifies torture and killing of prisoners of war and civilians as war crimes.
  • “PMC Wagner” is an unofficial Russian military unit that does not belong to the Ministry of Defense of Russia or other state structures. Fighters of PMC Wagner participate in ground operations in Syria, Africa and in the war with Ukraine. Mercenaries are suspected of committing numerous war crimes.
