A large-scale failure in the work of messengers, social networks and VPN services in Russia, which occurred on Tuesday, is connected with the actions of Roskomnadzor to ensure the blocking of Internet resources prohibited on the territory of the country, said Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Anton Tkachev.

“There are a number of sites, platforms, and unfriendly services to which our users will be limited in time. Roskomnadzor conducted this inspection in order to understand where there are bottlenecks that may in the future lead to the possible unblocking of certain channels,” – explained Tkachev.

The previous large-scale failure of the Internet in Russia (as noted by experts – possibly the largest in recent history) occurred at the end of January. Hundreds of sites, mobile applications and services in the .RU zone could not be opened by users for several hours, including the services of Yandex, Sberbank, VKontakte, Ozon, as well as the portal of the State Public Service.

Then the Ministry of Statistics of Russia said that the failure occurred due to a technical problem.

  • On February 27, users in many regions of Russia complained about problems with access to the largest messengers and social networks – in particular, Facebook, Telegram, YouTube and WhatsApp. At the same time, some, on the contrary, opened social networks blocked in Russia – in particular, Instagram and X. At first, the Ministry of Finance declared that they knew nothing about the reasons for what happened, and that they would find out together with Roskomnadzor.
